LOS ANGELES, Calif. – A singer and bassist from Portland won Best New Artist at the Grammy Awards Sunday night.

Esperanza Spalding beat out young superstar Justin Bieber for the top honor.

Esperanza was raised by a single mom in Northeast Portland.

The star's bio said that she has attributed her inspiration for pursuing a life in music to watching classical cellist Yo Yo Ma perform on an episode of "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" when she was four. And by the time she was five, she had taught herself to play the violin and was playing with the Chamber Music Society of Oregon.

Spalding attended King Elementary School in Northeast Portland and high school at the prestigious performing arts high school, The Northwest Academy. But she left high school at 16 and, after completing her GED, enrolled on a music scholarship in the music program at Portland State University, where her bio said she remembers being "the youngest bass player in the program."

After Sunday's big win, she said she hopes her Grammy will help music lovers look outside the mainstream.

In another local Grammy connection, a KGW viewer said a 2005 Lake Oswego High School graduate played drums in the opening number for Justin Bieber's live performance.

Gale Suda told KGW that Kevin Suda, 24, (pictured at left) was one of the Taiko drummers on stage. She said Kevin is a member of TaikoProject, a professional Taiko group based in Los Angeles.
