SAN ANTONIO -- A music teacher was told to beat it after school officials say she smacked a student with a drumstick.

Now the seven-year-old Leon Valley Elementary student has a gash across his cheek.

Northside Independent School District (NISD) officials say music teacher Deborah Barge lost her cool and flung a drumstick at a first grader who she didn't think was paying attention.

"She ended up bruising and bumping and cutting his cheek bone right underneath his eye," said Pascual Gonzalez, NISD spokesman.

Parents received a letter pointing out the drama that unfolded in music class.

The district says Burge was a teacher for 30 years.  But right now she is on administrative leave pending the outcome of this investigation.

Child Protective Services is also assisting NISD police.
