Now a Mac-native client, features iTunes matching

Rdio, the North American-based subscription music service and recommendation engine, is releasing a new Mac-native desktop client on Monday that features compatibility with the keyboard's media keys, an iTunes-matching feature that takes a list of a user's iTunes songs and activates the same songs (and recommends similar ones) on the service, and provides access to Rdio's library of over eight million songs.

The program will be available from March 7th as a free download. After a seven-day free trial, the service offers either a browser-only subscription for $5 per month, or an unlimited subscription (using the web site, a Mac or Windows desktop, mobile apps as well as Roku and Sonos music players) for $10 per month.

The company was founded by two of the original creators of Skype, and the service goes beyond just offering a large library of streamable music by also making crowd-sourced recommendations, showing new releases and top charts, and showcasing music and artists similar to the ones users mark for their own playlists. Users also have the option of buying songs they hear (the songs are offered in MP3 format) if they would like a permanent copy. Purchased songs can be stored in the Rdio desktop app or moved into iTunes.
